Smith County School District Back To School 2020-21 Quick Reference Guide
To assist parents with understanding the approved back to school plan for Smith County Students, the reference guide below has been prepared. A detailed guide for the online Remote Learning option will be posted as soon as completed. ALL STUDENTS ATTENDING ON-SITE OR VIA VIRTUAL LEARNING MUST BE REGISTERED THRU SKYWARD
Option 1: Traditional School Setting (on-site) Students attend school in a traditional setting at school from 8-3 with bus transportation available. Students will begin school with a staggered start. Students attending school on-site may participate in extracurricular activities and school sponsored athletics. In the event of a state mandated shut down due to COVID-19, the classroom would convert to an online model led by the student’s assigned classroom teacher. In the event of a shutdown, the school district will make devices in the form of a Chromebook available at no cost to families. Any student not registered for school using the Skyward Online Registration process by July 24 will have to be registered on-site on Registration Day which will be held on Aug. 5th from 8-10am. COVID-19 safety measure will be in place during the on-site Registration Day.
Option 2: Virtual Learning Program Students attend school in a virtual classroom setting at home. Students will be assigned a Virtual Learning Instructor for coordinating the Virtual Learning Program. Instruction will be the responsibility of the parent to ensure students attending the virtual campus are in compliance with the state guideline for attendance on a virtual campus which is 7 hrs daily of online instruction. Students attending via remote learning will use Odysseyware, an online learning resource through the district. It will be the responsibility of parents enrolling their child(ren) in remote learning to ensure the student meets all requirements of attending school in the Virtual Learning Program. Students who do not fulfill the attendance obligations of the virtual program as required by the state of TN will be removed from the program and must attend school using Option 1 above. Parents who choose the Virtual Learning Program will be committing to this learning pathway for a complete semester for grades 3-12 and a full nine week grading period for grades K-2. Devices will be made available at no cost to parents if needed. The school district WILL NOT provide Internet access in the home. Parents may register thru July 24 for school using the Skyward Online Registration Process.
